COLOMBO – FROM THE KINGDOM OF KOTTE TO THE MODERN CITY
The story of Colombo begins long before the modern city we see today.
During the 14th to 16th centuries, the nearby Kingdom of Kotte became one of the most important kingdoms in Sri Lanka. Kotte, located in the wetlands just east of present-day Colombo, developed into a powerful political and cultural centre. Its rulers controlled much of the island, while the nearby coastal settlement of Colombo grew in importance as a trading port.
HOW DID COLOMBO GET ITS NAME?
The origin of the name Colombo has been explained in several ways, and its exact linguistic history is debated.
One widely cited explanation connects the name with the Sinhala name “Kolamba,” traditionally associated with a harbour or port. Another historical tradition connects the name with the “Kola-amba”, or mango tree, which was said to have been a notable landmark in the area.
When the Portuguese arrived in Sri Lanka in the early 16th century, they recorded the name as “Colombo.” Over time, this Portuguese form became the internationally recognized name of the city.
The development of Colombo was closely connected with the rise and later decline of the Kingdom of Kotte. As European powers arrived and competed for control of Sri Lanka’s maritime trade, Colombo became increasingly important as a strategic harbour and trading centre.
The Portuguese, Dutch and British each left their mark on Colombo, transforming its architecture, administration, trade and urban landscape. Yet beneath the colonial layers lies a much older story — one connected to the history of Kotte and the surrounding region.
